Monkey’s Penis

Not really. But that’s what they call Bamboo Clam here apart from many other names like Live Razor Clams, sea needle, ambal, etc. We call it tek tarhn in hokkien.
The distant relative of the mussel
This is well-known in Sarawak especially in Kuching (and Buntal). The above was stir-fried in curry powder with a little ginger and garlic. I read somewhere that this way of cooking the ambal does not do justice to the texture and flavour. Another way to cook this to steam it. But the best result, according to that website, is obtained by stir-frying garlic and large red chillies over a hot flame. The bamboo clams, along with their shell, are added with finely chopped ginger and a little serai (lemon grass) and the whole mixture is doused with Chinese wine and steamed until the clams are just starting to get soft. I didn’t know that!
And according to the author, not all seafood restaurants in Kuching knows how to prepare the steamed version properly. Those that do include Sea Good (Ban Hock Road, opposite Hua Kuok Inn), Benson’s Seafood (Behind Chan Chin Ann Road), and Ban Hok Seafood (Ban Hock Road, opposite Grand Continental Hotel). And I didn’t know that too!
Whatever. I love all types of seafood! Steamed or fried monkey’s penis, all I eat! ![]()

owww!! long time din makan liaw!!!!! ish saya mau makan juga!!
Bintulu or Miri don’t have meh? Or you haven’t eaten seafood for a long time liao? School holiday already or not? Gawai got go Sibu?
yes…tasted those bamboo clams before… but i still prefer the lala type.. after seeing this, i also must go makan this weekend…
Those are different species even though same family. Cannot compare like that.
nice kah? saw this thing on documentary before .. so menggeli-gelemankan!
Nice! If you like seafood, you should try this. But choose bigger clams (say as big as your index/middle finger) as they are juicier. Small clams got one kind of taste I don’t really fancy.
A late uncle of mine used that term to refer to the chup-chup…the type you suck the tail end and then you suck the other end to get it out of the shell. That one’s obscene right down to the way of eating!!! LOL!!!
We refer that kind of clam (it’s called balitung, I learned in Penang) as chup-chup leh as well maybe due to the loud kissing sound when you suck at both ends of the clam. LOL!!!
My late aunt has a name for this and my late grandmother used to tell her off….for calling them…”kelentit”. Thought they are normally eaten raw…and wasabe or tobasco sauce are strictly prohibited.
How does it taste like?
We used to call them xiao lanjiao! haha!
Really? Monkey ku ku sound better. Hahahaha!!!
i must try this when i go kuching. might be there on the 3rd..
Oh? You didn’t have this the previous times you were here?
So small, can satisfy you meh? lol.
You should go to Top Spot to try. They have this dish (tek tarhn) stir fried in curry powder. Oh yeah the taste really hits your taste buds.
hmmm…. didnt know you have such fetish hahahaha!
