Laksa Buffet
Mar 30th, 2009 by Clare
A normal bowl of laksa anywhere costs about RM3.50 whereas a special would cost RM4.50. I usually have my weekly dose of Sarawak Laksa (not that I eat any other type of laksa for that matter) on Wednesdays (Chong Choon laksa closes on Tuesdays) and Saturdays, sometimes on Thursdays and Sundays as well, depending on the level of craving
Hehehe!
The difference between the normal and the special laksa is the size of the prawns. I always have laksa special. I’ll stop by Chong Choon on my way to work on weekdays for laksa. Fat Cat (sometimes Foody Goody) will be patronized on weekends.
Remember the other day I was talking about hunting for the Hitz.fm Fugitive? Well, after the hunt, we went back for dinner and guess what we had? No price for guessing. We had laksa buffet!
Laksa buffet is basically about preparing the ingredients of laksa separately and you can eat as much as you like, combining the ingredients in your bowl as much as you like. The basic ingredients of Sarawak Laksa are:
Bihun, or vermicelli one of the most important ingredients, pre-soaked in water to soften it.
Fat bean sprouts, or taugeh, rinsed.
Fried-to-golden eggs cut into strips.
Shredded chicken thigh (or any other part for that matter but I prefer thigh as it is more tender)
Shrimps
Optional ingredient:
Cockles
And the most important ingredient of all…
Pipping hot laksa gravy/soup!
Without this, your laksa will not be called laksa (I also don’t know called what). So what you do is, prepare a pot of boiling water on the stove and with the water boiling, dip some bihun (or as much as you like), taugeh and cockles (optional) in it. After dumping all the ingredients into a bowl, pour the laksa soup over them and there you go…
Squeeze some calamansi juice into your laksa for that extra ooomph! But some people don’t do that, so either way, it’s okay.
Before I forget…
Sambal belacan for the prawns/shrimps dippings!
The good thing about laksa buffet is you can eat as much or as little as you like, add your favourite ingredient(s) more, do not add your least favourite ingredient, etc etc. In that case, I don’t really like taugeh so I left that out of my laksa
PS: We forgot to take picture of the laksa before eating because it smelled so good and looked so enticing that we wasted no time digging into it
I’m craving for laksa now, damn! And to rub it in, Chong Choon laksa is closed tomorrow (Tuesday)! $%^&*!!!

I thought Kuching people dunno how to cook laksa…because they all go out to eat - all the nice ones in so many places. Only Sibu people forced to cook their own as in the past, all yucky ones. At least now there are a couple of good ones worth eating!
Hahahhahaha!!! Come to think of it, I did have laksa buffet back in Sibu before because all laksa not nice wan.
Well, want to try out the paste brand mah. That wasn’t Barret or something like that.
One comment - so chor lo!!! The chicken not shredded till hair-like and the egg also not thinly sliced. You see mine very the eyew-siew one! Hahahahahahaha!!!! The gravy looks super-duper delicious though! And got clams some more!!! Ooooo….Droooooollll!!!!
I wasn’t the one making all that so no complain, later on no more how?
Eyew-siew or not nehmind, I was hungry plus everything comes out the same so no problem. Hahahahahha!!!
i have seen laksa paste selling in supermarket is that what all u need to make da laksa soup?
btw, lol at stp’s 2nd comment
Yes, it is. Abuthen you think we can magically stir the pot and make the laksa soup meh?
I still miss Penang Asam Laksa…
Maybe I born from Penang.
Maybe lor! Hoiyo, long time no see!
How are you doing, man?!
I think you should try out the Laksa at Chong Ling Park (the one opposite Ling Hua San Temple). The kopitiam is called Mei Mei Cafe (opposite the snooker centre).
for me, the auntie there serves the best laksa as compared to Chang Choon/Choon Hui or even then one at Golden Arch…
the special laksa is RM6, but seriously I’m more willing to spend RM6 for the laksa there than other places in Kuching…
PS: oh yea, if you love chicken skin, can also ask the auntie to put in some in your laksa… hehehe…
there’s a laksa picture that I was talking about here:

Well, best laksa for an individual is very subjective and it depends on the person’s preference. So I won’t judge which laksa is the best in Kuching but I’d like to try out laksa at places other than those I normally frequented. Thank you for the info.
Looks yummi!
Where is this place? By any chance in KL or PJ??
Been having serious craving for S’wak food lately, this morning went to Tmn Megah, PJ to have “Kampua” ask them to add kicap, looks like it, smells like it, BUT still not the same as Sibu one..
This is cooked AT HOME (Kuching)! There is no chance at all in KL or PJ you can find such delicious Sarawakian food. There’s one Sarawak Laksa in Bangsar if you are desperate, the taste is almost there but not as nice as compared to what you can get in Sarawak. Beggars can’t be choosers
Yumm! Cockles!Interesting, never thot of that! My nephew got me a pkt of ‘Barret’ from kch. hrd it is very nice, have not try it yet.
It was really nice with cockles! Should try it!
Yup! I heard Barret is the nicest lor. Have a packet of that but haven’t cooked yet.
so, now you change profession dy? Should be ok wat .. can open stall liaw you. Make good money hoh ..
Yalor…but so much competition here. Hehehe!
GREAT POST But……..
Aiyo…so envious of you all. do you want to know how much a bowl of laksa will cost me and most of my friends? Tell you anyway..its actually appox..RM12 leh..ie RM5.00(cost of laksa)+RM2.50(colestrol tablet)+RM1.80(high blood tablet)+RM3.50(asorted pills and tabs)etc…etc. Stp used to say eat first and pay later…so so so true ya!
I actually commented on stp post the other day that I frequent his daily post just to check out what food to avoid..hahahahahaha.
Hahahahahaha!!! *ehem* Not laughing at you…but at your statement about the tablets. LOL! Indulge once in a while is fine, other times have to refrain lor and eat healthy. Aiyor…meaning I have to start watching what I eat so that don’t end up having to eat a lot of tablets. Hahahahaha!
I think you meant Calamansi juice….coz Calamari’s squid, as in sotong….imagine pouring sotong juice all over that heavenly laksa! lol
I love kuching laksa….can’t wait to get my dose when I’m back home for the hols tomorrow
