The motions for the National Health Sciences Debate 2008, or better known as NHSD, has just been released. The NHSD is conducted in British Parliamentary style, which is also the format used in the prestigious World Universities Debate Championships (WUDC). This year’s theme is Healthcare Professionals - Challenging the Roles of Doctors. Interesting motions they have.

• This house would allow specially trained nurses to perform services usually carried out by doctors.
• This house believes influenza immunization should be mandatory for healthcare workers.
• This house believes that health literacy should be the responsibility of health care professionals.
• This house would subject health professionals to mandatory ‘continuing education’.
• This house should no longer approve a drug if it only offers marginal benefits.
• This house would compel doctors to report instances of domestic violence.
• This house would force doctors to declare their profession before boarding an airplane.
• This house would sue countries that produce their own generic drugs.
• This house would sue tobacco companies for causing lung cancer.
• This house would ban OTC nutritional supplements (steroids).
• This house believes that fat kids should be sent to dietitians.
• This house believes that pharmacists must accompany doctors on consulting rounds.
• This house believes that TCM units should not be set up in hospitals. (What’s TCM?)
• This house believes that allied health professionals should do compulsory service in Malaysia.
• This house would exempt privately funded medical graduates from compulsory service.
• This house believes that all private clinics to employ a pharmacist in their departments.

I am sure some of us would enjoy ourselves watching the debate if we’re there, right Arthur? Was supposed to join last year’s NHSD but chickened out in the end, no balls mar, what to do?
