Bread For My Baby-O
Nov 4th, 2008 by Clare
Bao zi, or simply, bao is the Chinese equivalent to Western bread. Bao is widely known as Chinese steamed bun and they are filled with varieties of tasty fillings, e.g. pork, chicken, red bean paste, butter, kaya, coconut, etc. Do not confuse bao with mantou, which are unfilled buns.
Anyway, Alvin and I visited Suituapui before we left for Kuching. I wanted to give him a hotel keycard to add to his collection and I also brought along some delicious bao from Kuching. [The poor fella bitten by ants all over his body from plucking rambutans at his backyard. Thanks, Arthur, for the 2 containers full of peeled - so that we didn’t have to bring the ants to Kuching - rambutans!
They are nice - juicy and sweet!]
Out of 10 person whom I asked to try these bao, 10 of them sang praises of these humble- and plain-looking bao.
Char Sio Bao
An hour later, an SMS from Suituapui said that the bao are nice! He blogged about it here, go and read what he says. I personally love this bao. Most bao I bought are thick-skinned with very little fillinsg but not those from Siao Bao Wang
Bao they sell here are simply delicious! The skin is not too thick but most importantly, the fillings are a lot.
This shop is located at Jalan Padungan (corner shop at the block next to the fire station) in Kuching. I bought 20 of the bao back to Sibu but only 19 made it to destination because I couldn’t resist eating one, after leaving the shop
The good thing about this shop is that you can opt to eat here. They also have a variety of buns (in shelves on the left, as you can see in the picture) and dim sum for your blow water (Cantonese)/chia dui pao (Foochow)/talk cock session with your family/friends.
This is the “very delicious buns/rolls with a generous slice of ham and nice sweet-sourish cream” that Suituapui was talking about in his post. They are really good!
I think this shop sells the best bao in Kuching!

See! I know where to get the nicest things to eat, even in Kuching! Next thing u must try is the hay-pia at Peterson’s, cafe next to Satok Market- fruits section. Best lah! Even Old Rex cant compare!
I went to Peterson’s once and they were close that day. I think Old Rex’s haypia got nothing to shout about lor, summore so expensive…Wednesday popiah tomorrow! Yay!!!
[…] Kuching if you’re coming from the fire station end. I have been there a few times to buy the very delicious buns/rolls with a generous slice of ham and nice sweet-sourish cream. Somebody told me before that the […]
