Walking Down Memory Lane: Elaine (Part 2)
Oct 14th, 2008 by Clare
First of all, before I start, a million apologies to my dear friend, Elaine, for taking more than a year to come up with this long overdue post. When you know someone for so long and so well, it is hard to put all that into writing. I could write a book if you want me to talk about everything!
Ready to kick some asses!
Her name is Elaine R. Patrick. She is a product of mixed parentage - Iban and Chinese
I have known Elaine for ages. Although we were in the same school, we did not realized each other’s existence until we were about 8 or 9. This makes her the second longest girlfriend best friend (15 years and counting) I’ve known in my life after Cheryl, who still holds the record of 16 years and counting!
We knew we were in the same school but we did not talk to each other. Most probably because we were from different classes. And these two classes were always fighting.
I then saw her in church and found out that our parents are friends. Ah, well, I can’t really recall how we met and all that but eventually we became friends and started smiling at each other in school whenever we crossed path.
We’ve been spending a lot of time together throughout our childhood, especially in secondary school. We started to become classmates since Primary 5 when the school decided to put the smart kids in one class and the smarter kids in another. We went to camps together, slept together (not what you are thinking!), ate together, sometimes studied together, went to tuition classes together, played basketball together, went swimming together, jogged together, learnt driving together, etc.
We were, in a way, inseparable. Where there is Elaine, there is Clare. Even our moms are best friends. They shared cooking/baking recipes and gardening tips every now and then that both of our houses looked like forest garden. I love her mom’s mee sua kueh! The best in the world! Yummy! *salivating* Our dads (May God rests their souls) used to play the guitar together in church. And they are really good!
We’ve grown so fond of each other that we can practically read each others’ mind. We actually finished each others’ sentences and in a lot of situation, say the same word(s)/phrase at the same time! And I thought only twins can do that! Freaky eh? It was, but we were so used to it already it became a part of our lives
We were the mean people (as Jean Chiew put it). We gave nicknames that only both of us knew, to people. It was sort of like a Morse code for us when we were referring to that person without he/she actually knowing it. LOL! (Elaine, remember to whom we gave the nicknames longkang weed, sakit jiwa, kayu, rambut palsu, drain weed, etc to???
)
Once upon a time, when we had nothing to do, we’d sit at the bench in front of Life Bookstore at Wisma Sanyan and criticized everyone that walked past us. From the way they dress, the way they walk, their hair, the things that they were carrying, their shoes, their voices, everything! There was once when Elaine mentioned about the importance of the way a guy walks, a guy walked by with the weirdest walk we’ve ever seen! Both of us just stared at him wide-eyed, in silence, before laughing hysterically when the guy was out of sight! ROTFLMAO!!!
Elaine is now across the globe in the United Kingdom pursuing her degree in engineering. We kept in touch via e-mail at first but lost contact for a year due to our busy schedule. I felt so bad I didn’t bother to keep in touch with her.
But we met and went for a vacation to Redang Island together when she was back for her holidays last year. We managed to catch up and keep in touch after that.
I love Elaine to bits!
(OMG! I sound so lesbo!) I am who I am today partially is because of her influence in my life and her sincere friendship. I could search the whole world but I’ll never ever find another Elaine. Period!
Personal message to Elaine: I wish you all the best in everything you do. God bless! See you when I see you
End of the year, maybe. Make sure you update your Things-To-Eat-When-I’m-Back list. ![]()

Sob sob sob……I LOVE YOU TOO!!!!!! MUAKSssss!!!! (sloppy kisses). I miss all those wicked time we had together. The ups and downs and all those delirious conversations. I remember saying once to you 10 years ago while on the verge of arguing/debating….’Saya memang tak malu sebab saya tak tahu malu….’ LOL! I didn’t mean the last bit of that sentence, still don’t know why I said that.
It became hilarious, we laughed so hard after that! LOL!
I remember skipping some sessions in the Youth Camp with you and we had a shower in some school…..was it…I don’t remember…the school near St.Rita….what school was that? was it even a school? anyway there wasn’t any water supply after we showered and we opened all the shower taps and left…then when we went up, the whole place was quite flooded :p
I think it was top floor of one of the Catholic High School buildings. And someone was saying “Siapa buka semua paip?” we buat muka selamba
remember the basket ball sessions too? the angels we were at the gate of heaven with St.peter? remember the driving lessons and test we had together? remember when we straightened our hair? and in all exams you were sitting behind me! and in the labs too. oh dear how we hated some teachers! and broke some apparatus. i think it was a test tube, when we wanted to measure the thickness with the micrometer screw gauge. belinda overheard and turned our ’shit’ into ’shhhhh…’ hahaha! remember this…’macam mana? macam mana? macam mana?….’ hundred times a day and all those insecurities i burdened you/your ears (and other friends like su yiu) with. if i was too fat, short, black and all those nonsense.
I sat behind you for all exams from Form 1 to Form 5 because our names are next to each other in the name list mar! Hahaha! Hah, talking about that teacher, I heard she died of heart attack or something? And we were so mean in her class.
We never really listened when she was teaching because she usually just speed through her slides and she never bothered about us. She had a pet in every of her class and I think ours was Su Yiu, if my memory serve me correctly
sure we had lots of frictions going on but which friends don’t right? i really miss all of you especially you and belinda! we’re so different from each other yet so common. time passes and we got on with life and yet i always reflect back and managed to laugh or smile most of the time. you girls have always been part of me more than anyone.
sure we changed a lot…principles and priorities but as cliche as this might sound….friendship forever…
p/s: those aren’t the best pictures innit? i’m prettier in real life innit? LOL! alright then, take care and all the best to you too. i’m sure we’ll do fine….
I don’t have a lot of your pictures and those are the best I could find at the moment. When we meet next time make sure we take a lot of pictures together lor
mmm…do tell me more about the sexciting times you 2 were together!
When I published the book then you buy lor, good thing no free wan. Kakakakakka!
Having bosom buddies whom you love not necessarily lesbo lah! I also have a few very close guy friends. Often they’re much much better than family and are always there when you need them!!!
No lah! Sound like lesbo only! Heheheh!
eh ? how come my sis in there and im not ? lol….
