Ah Tor Char Kueh Teow
Oct 8th, 2008 by Clare
Ah Tor’s char kueh teow is not your ordinary char kueh teow which you can find in any Tom, Dick or Harry corner coffeeshop.
A guy named Ah Tor started to fry his kueh teow the unusual way, i.e. kueh teow wrapped in egg, not exactly wrapped like nasi pattaya per se, only the top part and the kueh teow is stuck to the egg. Therefore, the egg on top of the kueh teow is the highlight of the dish
I had this for the first time when I was 11, cooked by the creator, Ah Tor, at the original coffeeshop, formerly known as Kok Cheng, opposite Star Cineplex (then Cathay Cinema) Sibu.
Years after that the son(s) took over and now they are cooking the same style of kueh teow all over the town. I still prefer the original by Ah Tor because the taste now varies from one place to another. The ones in the pictures are from Choon Seng coffeshop in Sg. Merah, apparently cooked by the wife of one of Ah Tor’s sons.
I remember vividly that Ah Tor fried the kueh teow with a lot of ku chai instead of taugeh (bean sprout) like the one in the photo. Rumour had it that there was some sibling rivalry which led to new stalls at Apollo and Sg. Merah. However, places like Happy Hours in Rejang Park, coffeeshop behind Kidney Foundation and Coffee Castle also make similar fried kueh tiaw - Ah Tor-style!

People say kuchai not good, brings out all the old sickness in you. That’s why when l eat anything with kuchai, l’ll pick it out one by one and put by the side of my plate. But my Chinese sinseh says it’s not true. Dunno who to believe. Maybe it detoxifies, like wheatgrass, that’s why!
Different people say different thing wan. Now my maternal grandma suddenly said cannot eat banana because it’s not good. She heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend. I was like WTF?! So most of the times I just shut my ears and eat all I like. Bwahahaha!
another one to put in my to-eat note
You got so much things to eat but when are you going to Sibu? Air Asia very the cheap wor
