SBU Merdeka Dinner
Sep 1st, 2008 by Clare
*SBU = Sibu Bloggers United
In conjunction of the Merdeka Day celebration, I’m just kidding, we’re not THAT patriotic! Well, in a way, thanks to the M-Day, guess who was in town to rock the SBU’s boat?
The handsome (almost) botak Bongkersz! (For some reasons he looked ‘well-fed‘ in this photo)
Everytime someone we know (especially a blogger) is in town, we’d round up some loyal followers for a makan session. Anyway, what excuse is lamer than this to have a bloggers’ meet, right? Eating is literally our religion. Where else do you find us saying the grace and giving the food some flashes of blessings before having our meal? Non-bloggers might suffer a culture shock while dinning with us.
Last night, the targeted restaurant was Hai Bing Restaurant at Jalan Maju (facing the Esplanade)
Wet Fried Noodles
Master Suituapui brought a guest to dine with us. Let’s just call him Mr Guest from this point onwards. Mr Guest is Cikgu Suituapui’s ex-student and is not a blogger. He did suffer THE culture shock and has to be reminded from time to time to not touch the food until STP said he could. LOL!
We’re mean, shut up!
Ang Zhao Pork
The Master claimed that he can cook better than this. I have to agree with him even though I have yet to taste any of his cooking at all because I find this a bit too mild for my likings. It felt like the taste is there but not quite there, you get what I mean? No? Never mind. I love ang zhao pork especially when the ang zhao is very strong. Some people like it mild but I don’t.
Midin
Give me midin anytime! This is one of my favourite vegetable dishes in the world. It doesn’t matter whether you cook it with belacan or red wine, it still tastes nice! Both give very different taste experience. You cannot get this in West Malaysia, that’s why I love Sarawak so much!
Someone (a commentor from my food blog) asks me how to grow midin ourselves. I almost dropped off my chair!
Tofu Soup
It was nice but I’d love to have a touch of sourness in the soup. IMHO, adding a little bit of dark vinegar would make the soup taste nicer. An jua? Wa suka jiak cho, beh sai hia? (What! I like to be *jealous, cannot is it? * jiak = eat, cho = vinegar; jiak cho in Hokkien means jealous)
Asparagus
I’ve learnt from my friend who commented lately, that asparagus is a native aphrodisiac! I simply deliver the asparagus-being-an-aphrodisiac fact at the table but if anyone noticed, this dish was almost finished in a blink of an eye! By who? I didn’t notice. Definitely not me, I do not have Erectile Dysfunction.
Crab
Supposedly THE BEST in Sibu. And yeah, I love crab (any seafood, for that matter). If only I didn’t talk that much when I was eating, I probably would have eaten more! But Mr Guest (who sat next to me) has a lot of stories to tell so I couldn’t help it. Apparently Mr Guest is allergic to crabs. He said he’d get rashes all over his arms and body. And the only way to counter the allergic reaction is to down some beer. Interesting!

After dinner, there were of course the crapping session that touch on work to sex to the moon and back
By then I noticed the place was deserted because only our table was making all the noises, talking and laughing aloud. Since the night was still young (it’s only 9.30pm wei) we brought our conversation to a more chilled environment at R & R. More on that with photos in the next post
Nah, a little preview
Chilling out at R&R. Bong was ‘blushing’ furiously. I guess he’s shy (even after all the alcohol? Are you kidding me?)

Wow.. it can make me drool over the screen…lol
Someone really needs to invent the computer screen wiper ala car wipers liao, with so many food outings around
It was nice…but not that great! I think we would get some nicer dishes at Ruby but then I thought we’d try some place different for a change. I’ll post on this dinner tomorrow…..
Yupe! It was nice but not that great. Give me Ruby anytime. Hahaha! My photos all not nice liao after my big equipment has shrunken. LOL!

Plus I’m not a type of green vegetable also…LOL! Yeah, and we all got to see another side of Bengbeng which no one else had seen before. Hahahaha!
i lurve midin…but some said bidin/ paku pakis? are they da same?
i tried my first midin in Sarawak, in Semenenjung can’t find one…

Its midin, even though some people might call it million, billion, bidin, etc. However, paku pakis is a different thing but the same species as midin.
[…] Don’t worry! It wasn’t an all-stag party as we had our sweet young thing, Clare, with us. You can click this link to her blog to see her post on the dinner. […]

[…] I was back to my hometown - Sarikei for the Merdeka weekends. I drove back to Sarikei on Saturday morning. A 6-hour journey, stopping twice, at Serian and Lachau. (No Lanchau lah!) The next day I made a quick trip by bus to Sibu for another makan-makan gathering. Ehem, bloggers meet the main agenda is always about food, so naturally after few meetings, yours truly received comments like “For some reasons he looked ‘well-fed‘ in this photo“. […]
Bong looks super fat!
Hahahahahahahahaha!!!
