May-Ley-Sia Meh-Dv-Ka

*May-Ley-Sia = Malaysia or in Foochow sounds like “cannot eat”
*Meh-Dv-Ka = Merdeka or in Foochow sounds like “sell pig leg”
The title means the independent day of Malaysia and has no particular meaning in Foochow at all. It is just the way to pronounce it in Foochow which means a whole different thing.
Anyway, I remember when I was in primary school where they had a merdeka celebration every year. They were just like the school assembly except that we were forced to sing a few more extra songs apart from Negarakuku Negaraku and Sarawak state song. Sudirman’s “Tanggal 31 bulan lapan…” never failed to make its cover version with 300-500 kids screeching at the top of their voices while waving ugly and distorted handmade flags (most probably forced by the teacher teaching Pendidikan Seni (Arts) for this ocassion). Same thing happened when I was in secondary school minus the screeching and distorted flags but we were forced to pay 50sen or RM1 for the plastic flags. Sudirman (God rest his soul) would be turning in his grave if he heard how these kids scream his song!
Apart from that, at the end of the assembly, we were supposed to echo the shouts of 3 MERDEKAs at the top of our voices. A teacher would take the lead of shouting “MERDEKA!!!” while pumping his/her fist into the air and we students were forced to immitate! Repeat that three times and you could see stars. I know I did!
It’s a long weekend for you modern slaves out there. Enjoy to the max while you still can. I’ll be belting out “NEGARAKUKU” the whole day and annoy the hell out of my family members because it seems like the perfect song to celebrate today!
*cue of the song Negarakuku*
…Negaraku! Negarakuku!
