Having A Feast At Kuching Fest
Aug 25th, 2008 by Clare
Being kiasu like every other Kuchingite (FYI, I’m not a Kuchingite. I have been Kuchingized), I went to Kuching Fest (for the first time!) on the first day of its opening. As expected it was so crowded like how the Chinese put it “people mountain, people sea”. I guesstimated more than half of Kuching population was there judging from the crowd we have to squeezed through.
See some chao Ah Bengs smoking in front of the place
Kuching Fest has majority FOOD stalls that sell local food or otherwise, but the latter taste very local.
This is a Thai stall (called Thai Delight, if I’m not mistaken) selling supposedly Thai food but they looked local. Maybe its the taste. I didn’t bother to try because I just had my dinner before visiting this place.
Apart from the Colonel fast food you can see from the first picture, we also have Sugarbun in the house tent
For reasons unknown, people flocked these fast food kiosk as if they (the fast food chain) are the next best thing to…say, Big Apple Donuts at The Spring(?). You should see the queue at Big Apple. (But Big Apple at Pavillion is a rotten one
)
Anyway, back to Kuching Fest. Most stalls are run by Chinese but there are Malay stalls too, selling one of the authentic Malaysian food
Satay
Lemang (glutinous rice cooked in the bamboo)
And if you’re lucky, you can even get to watch live cooking shows. This guy was skillfully cooking char kueh from Hong Kong Char Kueh (I’m not sure if Hong Kong really got char kueh) kiosk.
Also some ladies skillfully frying some orh chien from Original Teochew Oh-Chien kiosk.
Then you have some
Salad You Tiaw or You Zha Kueh Salad
So-called Open Air Market Sio Bee with steamed and fried version.
One thing I don’t like about going to places like this is that you came out smelling like fried food
Kuching is so fried!
Roasted bird? Hamik jiao? Blue bird got or not? (Say this aloud in Hokkien!)
Kampua Talk Exclusive (TM)
I don’t know prawns have balls, never mind cute or not!

Finish liao lo… hehehe…

Eh, why KL don’t have this kind of yummy fest one?

Mak datin, tak baik tau meng-tempt-kan orang dengan food yang best cam nih. Huhu. Temptation~~~~ Clare, kalau hang bukak gerai kat Sydney, pasti kaya raya tau. I will be your number one fan. Ahaks!!
Tapi kan, taste of the food mentioned here will be different if bukak gerai kat Sydney lah. Tak authentic dah nanti
Anne S Juan: You seem very tempted to taste local food huh? Come to Kuching la, then I boleh bawa you ngan Clare pergi makan sampai muntah! kekekekeke… Maaf eh, bahasa I dah basi…
yo! i just ate char kuey yesterday with bamboo shoots and rice porridge (just thought i’d mention because i saw the char kuey :p) i think hongkongers eat char kuey just like us too. here they call it congee…don’t know why…
i thought that ‘cute prawn balls’ was funny. lol!
oh and one of the aphrodisiacs of the natives (or…anyone i guess because i don’t really know if we natives really know if it was an aphrodisiac) would be asparagus. come to think of it do we grow asparagus in sarawak? i have a very ignorant west malaysian friend who thought asparagus was the Ibans’ staple food. LOL! and the other day one asked me…..”Do you live in the long house?” LOL! man… these people…..they’re quite amusing….
anyway take care!
Char kuey is called congee in hong kong? I thought porridge is called congee. Hmm…

Elaine: Hey Elaine, I love asparagus wei… Yummy
It costs AUD2 here for a bunch. Not too expensive, I reckon.
