Craving For Food Back Home
Apr 23rd, 2008 by Clare
Sidenote:My take on Malaysian Dreamgirl: Why everyone complains about Adeline’s Ah Lian-ness in speaking English? You guys should listen to that guy from Carven (latest episode) spoke! He is even worse! And when people are complaining about Cindy’s fake accent when talking in front of the camera, listen to how Nadia, the garang girl, talks. Nadia seems to try too hard to put a FAKE accent when she talks and I don’t get what is she trying to say! I would love to see these two being eliminated, no model quality also can get in, one might wonder why! *Note to self: Don’t even dare to say anything about Ringo, later her die-hard-fan-see all come slam kao me, I mati katak!* I couldn’t resist it, she is too short to be a model. That’s one. Two. Her BMI is below healthy/standard BMI for her height. That means she should be banned from the runway! MDG, what the hell are you doing??? Someone is going aneroxic here!!! That’s negative image to Malaysians!!!
How do you describe EXTREME GEK XIM-NESS???
Answer: When other bloggers from your home kept posting food only available back home with extreme description (especially if that blogger is Suituapui, because he is good in playing around with words, dang!) and you are 800km from home for God-knows-how-long!
One food a day, ranging from Kampua and Laksa (these two already can kill!) to Midin and Teng Meng Ngu or better known as Tien Pien Hu, I could buy a new LCD monitor everyday due to its short life-span from the constant drooling of saliva that spoilt the whole thing! And yes, Sarawakians in KL especially, will take the effort to hunt for Sarawak food here, if any. Their effort to search for authentic Sarawak food has been in vain but they are not giving up that easily. They are satisfied, temporarily, when their tastebuds sense a tinge of authentication (got such word ar?) in the so-called authentic Sarawak food. Like Moses Lim (from Singapore sitcom Under One Roof) once said, “The BEST Maggi Mee is still the Maggi Mee in your cupboard.” Literally.
At the moment, I am craving for these, though not in season yet:
Dabai. With black kicap and sugar.
Also known as the Sarawak Olive, dabai is cooked by soaking it in hot water until the flesh become soft. Some smart-ass thought they could cook the dabai faster by throwing them into hot boiling water, like how you cook Maggi, but for some reasons the dabai remain hard. I have yet to find the answer to that
Best taken with salt or black kicap + sugar, I prefer the latter. Well-cooked dabai taste creamy (lemak) and bonus point goes to thin skin! I don’t like thick-skinned dabai. Anyway, just don’t forget to brush your teeth or at least gargle your mouth after eating dabai. I could tell if he/she had dabai for lunch/dinner from his/her smile. (Aiya, neh, the black skin could get stuck at your teeth wan!)
Dabai is usually available at the end of the year, together with durian season! Both are my favourite and when the season arrive, they are so cheap and it would be eat-all-you-can for me. In the end, ulcers just love to keep me company! I couldn’t eat any durian or dabai last year because of some big bad ulcers! Shoo, ulcers, don’t bother me! Shoo!
UPDATE: My next post is posted before this post because I want to drool at the pictures of oh-kana/dabai. Scroll down for the latest news please! Thank you! ![]()

lulian ohh lulian…………….. hmmmmmmmm………….. when are you coming bek to me??? *sigh*
A lot of liu lian in KL now ler, but all also expensive wan!!
oh yes I miss dabai also
You are the most kesian wan lor! I heard durian in Australia no smell wan, worse no dabai!
usually too hot (boiled water) would ‘destroy’ the dabai harden it still. my dad and I, we tried out the experiment by steaming them one day to have all dabai hard-ed like stones.
you can also put them inside your car part under the hot sun, when you go shopping or at work if you can’t find anyway there’s hot warm water to cook dabai. it works. just a suggestion though for dabai craving. hehehe!!
Thanks for the info! Yes, I’ve tried cooking the dabai under hot afternoon sun, and I think it tastes better than soaked ones. Yummy!
Suituapui is torturing you with images of food?? LOL
Dabai? Never heard of this one .. but anything that can be eaten with kicap is a must try for me! *takes note* must try this if I see one ..
