Cafe Cafe in Sibu
Dec 30th, 2007 by Clare
Yesterday was my dad’s birthday. We usually eat out for dinner on birthdays. Sick of having fast food like KFC, Pizza Hut or Sugarbun, I suggested we go to Cafe Cafe for dinner after attending Sunset Mass at church. I went there with my friends last week and love the place to bits!
The classy-looking Cafe Cafe shares the same name as the Cafe Cafe in KL but they are totally two different cafes. Cafe Cafe in Sibu is located at Jalan Chew Geok Lin, the middle shop at the shop lot right next to Tua Pek Kong Temple. Everything is so good at the Cafe Cafe that it is worth mentioning in Kampua Talk! (No, they did not pay me to write a review about them, if you are asking)
The shop has a classic look because the shop alone was formerly a typically old traditional shop in town. Once you pushed the door to enter Cafe Cafe, don’t be surprised as you will be greeted by friendly waiters and waitresses there (or maybe the boss himself
). It was quite dim in the cafe as the surrounding is supposed to give you the romantic and warm feelings. However, the place is always full when I came so you can imagine the level of noise here. It kills the romantic setting but the warm and welcoming feelings were there.
We were seated in a table for four
Every table has a oil-based candle-like thingy (what do you call it?)
Just to give you enough light to scan through their menu. Each item in their menu is accompanied by a brief description of the food. Therefore, patrons will not get confused or deceived by the fancy names. Their descriptions are pretty accurate!
Without further ado, let’s go over some of their delicious, lips-smacking food. We’ll start with drinks. They have all kinds of fruit juice. And my dad ordered carrot juice
They have both iced and hot beverages. My mum and I had hot lemon and iced honey respectively
My brother ordered Iced Mocha Latte
It looked nicer before he drank it with whipped cream and a pinch of mocha powder sprinkled on top of the cream. When I was getting my camera ready, my brother had drank a mouthful and destroy the whipped cream!
Cafe Cafe was filled to the brim last night. Therefore, while waiting for the food to arrive, you can actually feast your eyes with the interior design of the cafe
The piece of art hanging on the wall
The only life decoration in the cafe.
The chandelier. There are 5 parts of the cafe. The first part is the outdoor tables, if you fancy feeding yourself to the mosquitoes and the pungent smell of durians outside. The second part is the front half of the air-conditioned cafe, the more casual part where you can hang out with your friends.
The third part is the section after the second part, with more dinner-like environment. The fourth part would be the upstairs of the cafe, where birthday parties (or any other organized events) are held. The final part is the toilet, you should also check out their toilet, it is so beautiful! Hahaha!
Then the food arrived at our table. My dad ordered a Tomato and Cincaluk with Omelette Fried Rice
Purposely blurred effect so that you can have a taste for yourself to know how good this is. My dad was impressed! The fried rice is wrapped in omelette ala nasi pataya at the mamak but the difference is that the omelette is so thick and juicy!
The cincaluk that came together with the fried rice was given in a small portion on the top right of the picture was heavenly! Take it together with the fried rice and omelette, you will fly to heaven and back in the longest time you can imagine!
My brother, on the other hand, ordered Creamy Cheese Chicken Chop Rice
It looked like baked cheese rice at Kim Gary chain restaurants but the taste was so different! The rice was cooked with parsley and other herbs that gave the aromatic fragrance. The chicken chop on top of the rice was nicely cooked, not too cook nor too raw. With the dish covered with creamy cheese, the aroma was enhanced tenfolds! I could smell the aromatic dish from across the table as my brother dug through the cheese!
My mother, after being warned countless of times by yours truly that the servings were HUGE, ordered small portion of Honey Garlic Fish Fillet
Crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside, the fish fillets were coated with honey which doubled the sweetness of the fish. I think they deep fry the fish fillet first before cooking it with garlic, lemon grass and chili. Finally sprinkled some chopped spring onions all over the fish. Best taken with the Sarawakian all time favourite rice, the Bario!
I ordered their signature dish, the Mee Mamak:
Mee Mamak here is nothing like the mee mamak you get in KL. Totally different. Here, it tastes like mee tomato with a hint of spiciness. It was a LARGE servings that my mum and I virtually shared a plate, with my brother stealing a few mouthfuls every now and then. I cannot describe that certain taste that makes it so delicious. It has a bit of spiciness from the chili, sourish and sweet from the tomato sauce, with all the other taste that was just the right amount! A plate like that could be shared among 3 people if you are not that hungry and it only costs RM5.50!!!! I repeat, ONLY RM5.50!!! Where else can you get this?
After struggling to finish off everything that we ordered, stealing a few bites off each other’s order, my family of four finally slumped surrendered in our seat not being able to move a muscle after the hearty meal! Oh, did I mention that the portion is HUGE?
My dad and his stomach were both satisfied to bits.
I scrapped clean my plate of Mee Mamak. That is how delicious it is! No kidding!
Oh ya, when one of the guys who came to collect our used plates asked our opinion regarding the food, all of us gave him 8 thumbs (will add my toes if I can) up because we were unable to speak (too full lah!).
Me: So, are you the manager?
Man: Yes, I am.
Me: Good. Can I have the permission to do a review on the food in my website?
Man: Of course, you can! ![]()
Me: Thanks!
Total damage done: less than RM65!
The staff of Cafe Cafe even said their ‘Thank yous’ and ‘Goodbye’ while we were on our way out. I managed to have a very quick chat with the boss.
Me: Boss, what’s your name?
Boss: I am Peter. Peter Tiong.
Me: Okay. So just to tell you that I am going to do a review on your restaurant in my website.
Boss: Oh! Sure sure! Come, here’s my name card! If you want to come next time, you can call to make reservation first.
Me: Alright, I definitely will. Thanks again!
And he showed us out. Now you tell me, with a service like that, worth going back or not? For the love of Mee Mamak, I say YES!
PS: Suituapui, you’ll love this place!

hmm.. if im not mistaken, that mee mamak also used to be country cafe’s trademark dish.. to bad it looks more like a rundown coffee house nowadays…
Next time when i go back…. i want to go there… thanks Clare..
I went once when it was at the old place - now Coffee & Bento and I was put off by the noise. If I wanted that kind of ambience, I’d just go to a coffee shop. Well, while u were at Cafe2, I was at Garden for the Barbecue Buffet Dinner. Got there at 8.30 but all the BBQ items were finished except for two chicken wings and 1 sardine head. There was food left on the buffet spread so we helped ourselves to that and when we got back to our table, I asked about the BBQ stuff. They told me it was all finished. I said (jokingly) in that case, they should give me a discount cos we were having a buffet without the BBQ. The waiter rudely said, “Who asked u to come so late? Come early lah, then u can have the BBQ stuff!” That put me off and I told them,”If I had come at 9.30, it would be my fault. In the newspaper, u said 6.30 to 9.30. I can call my lawyer and sue u for false advertising.” That scared them and they offered to grill some chicken wings for me in the kitchen…which they did. Two other groups came later than us…and they quietly had the leftovers! Gee! Was I mean or what???
Peter is a nice fella! HE can talk non-stop!
Happy New Year!
Hi Clare, it’s been a while since I wrote any comments on your entries. Kinda busy lately. But, don’t you worry, Kampua Talk will always be there for me when I’m free. Great to hear that Sibu has such a wonderful place to go and dine. I guess I have found a place to celebrate my dad’s birthday this coming 11th Jan. I’ll be back to Sibu soon. I miss Sibu so much and I am going to spend my wonderful 5-day leave in Sibu this time. Coffee…?
