Sidenote:On MSN, Bengbeng’s son was trying to trade for my Transformers:
Benghui: I give you oopi
Benghui: my dog
Clare: Don’t want!
Benghui: can lay eggs
Clare: *almost dropped from my chair*
No, this is not the day for you to legally box someone you do not like (even though I wish this is the reason) nor the day for you to return unwanted Christmas gift (usually wrapped in a box) to the owner.
We do not celebrate Boxing Day which falls on the 26th of December in Malaysia. A lot of people start working on the day after Christmas (poor thing!). However, Boxing Day is a public holiday and is celebrated in Australia, Britain, New Zealand and Canada. Well, the ang moh could just came up with any reason for a holiday. In fact, I initially thought that they purposely came up with the name so that they could get another day off work due to hangover after Christmas!
Anyway, traditionally, Boxing Day was the day to open Christmas Box to share the contents with the poor. It started in the UK in the Middle Ages when the alms box, collection boxes for the poor often kept in churches, were opened so that the contents could be distributed to poor people. Some churches still open these boxes on this day.
Anyway, whatever the reason is, it has nothing to do with the need to rid the house of empty boxes. A lot of people do not know the reason behind the day celebrated. Another day of shopping is better than none. That’s why people never bother.

Happy Boxing Day!
