When We Were Growing Up (Part 5)
Nov 12th, 2007 by Clare
As the 80s’ Baby, the songs that I listened to were very much different from the noise music that kids nowadays hear. I remember my dad telling me that I always played with his black recored machine what-do-you-call-it and spoiled the thing in the process.

Last time where got mp3 player?
I could sing a lot of mandarin songs by heart back then without knowing what the heck I was singing about. Thanks to my dad for playing the songs regularly which indirectly got me hooked. In no time, I could sing the song as smoothly as a record machine *slap self*
Sam Hui

I had taken likings for Sam Hui’s song and his acoustic skills, even until today.
Other mandarin oldies that I listened to were “Love You More Than I Can Say”, Wong Fei Hung’s theme song,………..Damn! I cannot remember any of them now!
Apart from that, I was also introduced to the King of Rock n’ Roll!

Elvis Presley
Who doesn’t know him? I don’t have to list down all of his songs. Google them.
The Beatles

Who doesn’t remember them? I will also not list down all their songs but “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” was one of my Top 5 In The Shower Chart
“Obladi Oblada”“It’s Been A Hard Days Night” and were songs I sang during my play time!
The Carpenters

“Top of the World” was my frequently hummed song when I was little.
All of the above was introduced by my dad who has a deep passion for music. The songs of yesteryears remain my all time favourite.
And then when I was 11, I bought the very first album:

Fool’s Garden
Only because of one particular song. Anyone remember what was that particular song that topped the chart for don’t-know-how-many weeks?

“The Lemon Tree”
A year later, when I was 12, the Backstreet Boys fever swept the town

“As Long As You Love Me” was the song we sang for our farewell party in Primary Six, Class of ‘97 of SRB Saint Rita, Sibu. That was when the Nick Carter-craze began! 0.o!!! 80% of the girls around me has this ‘celebrity crush’, they called it, on Nick Carter. But I didn’t like him. Haha!
I have this song on record, the black record (last time where got CD?), I heard this song for the first time on record as well. It remains my all time favourite. I am sure a lot of you know:

Sugar Sugar by The Archies
