I went on a day trip to Perlis on a boring weekend some time last year with a group of friends I just got to know then. We rented 2 cars for the trip. That was the first time of last year that I woke up that early - 8am!
Ready to go!
We started from the north. First destination: Padang Besar
Padang Besar, Bukit Kayu Hitam and Pengkalan Kubur have something in common. From these places, you can practically walk over to Thailand. There are usually flea market in this area. From soft toys to food down to medication, they are selling Thai prices but some are more expensive than what you can get locally. (I just hate soft toys! Yucks!)
Next, we stopped by Gua Kelam
A cave where most UUM students would come here for their outing. I was reluctant to come but it was 8 against 1, so I joined the majority. What a major disappointment! This is not a cave! They built wooden stairs and light up the entire cave! What is adventure when you build all the convenience??? Unlike Gua Niah in Sarawak, Gua Kelam has no bats, no bat-shit (what do you call it?), no stinky smell, no birds nest, no darkness, nothing…just some bright lighted wooden path for you to skip all the way to its rear exit.
We spent a few hours and had our lunch there before heading to Batu Pahat. 0.o!!! Batu Pahat in Johor??? Nah, there is a place called Batu Pahat in Perlis as well.
It is a Snake and Reptile Garden. As expected, we got to see:
Snake (DUH!)
Some of our friends got really excited when they saw the sign that leads to the crocodile pond. Rolling my eyes, I followed them. Town folks. *sigh* In my hometown, it is common to see crocodile crossing the roads lah!
C’mon! You know I am exaggerating! Anyway, back to crocodile pond, this view greeted me:
I went “WHAT??!! THEY PUT A LIZARD IN THERE AND CLAIMED IT AS CROCODILE???!!! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!!” one too loud and people were looking at me. Sia soi only! And I looked again. Oh, it is a lizard crocodile after all! *wipes sweat* People here are so proud about it and boasted that it is the biggest lizard crocodile they have in the state. *Rolling my eyes until the iris got stuck inside the back of my eyes socket*
THOSE (snake, crocodile, iguana, mongoose, tortoise, spider, etc) are all they have and called it a reptile garden, or so I thought, until I came across this:
Monkey Wong’s heng dai! They are so active, noisy and greedy. At one point, a monkey actually pee-ed while jumping and swinging around showering the stinky pee everywhere. Fortunately I was standing quite far but some of our friends got free tea!
I am beginning to suspect that Monkey Wong is the sifu of all monkeys and he escaped from this cage and swim all the way to Borneo. *rubbing chin* Hmmm… *staring sideways at Monkey Wong*
Leave ‘em monkeys! After having ‘tea‘ we headed to the Herbal Garden.
No picture was taken because the plants looked the same to me. Green, leaves, stem, with or without flowers, etc. What? You want me to take a picture of mimosa pudica and proudly show it here? You can find those by the roadside!
I made a U-turn after 30 seconds because greens did not amuse me and waited for the rest to get out. It was around evening when we reach Kangar. I did not know it was Kangar until I saw this:
The dead town has nothing to see at all. This erection most suitable to represent our August house - keris wagging! We just merely past by the town and went to Kuala Perlis for dinner.
Dinner by the jetty at a restaurant here is where most UUM students will come for their weekend dinner outside the campus after getting sick of food in UUM. After that we headed back to campus. It was already dark.
Only 5 minutes after leaving the jetty, our car started to jerk. We parked by the roadside to check:
Habis petrol! While the rest of the passenger and driver were discussing on what to do…
…I, on the other hand….
…happily posing in the middle of the road and camwhore!
Oh, we were not stuck there for too long as our friends in the other car went to the nearest petrol station and bought some petrol and saved us and they lived happily ever after.
A light post for the weekend ends here. Have an enjoyable weekend. This is Clare signing off with a…
NGAAAUUUMMM!!!
